Control doesn’t come from having the ball. It comes from understanding the game.
And that changes everything.
When you organize around the goal:
everything becomes equal
you depend on physicality
you depend on the opponent
If the opponent is faster, stronger, more athletic…
you have no real chance.
And when they’re not…
you’re still playing from equality, not from advantage.
The shift
You don’t organize around the goal.
You organize around the ball.
This is how you control the game
Miguel Llorente is a UEFA PRO-licensed coach and coach educator with six seasons at FC Barcelona, including as head coach of Barça B in Segunda División. He has also served as head coach of Deportivo de La Coruña and assistant at CD Castellón.
His thinking was shaped by years of direct exposure to the work of Paco Seirul·lo, FC Barcelona's performance methodology architect and former fitness coach under Cruyff and Guardiola. Not occasional contact, but years of observed sessions, analyzed matches, and ongoing exchange.
Today he works with coaches who want to build teams that are clearer, more stable, and more competitive. Not through rigid systems, but through a real understanding of how the game is organized around the ball.
"What stood out to me with Miguel’s approach is how quickly it translates into real game situations.
It’s not about adding more complexity, but about helping players recognize where the advantage is.
Once they start seeing it, decisions become faster… and the game feels much more under control."
"I’ve worked with automatisms and passing patterns, but they never fully helped my players solve situations with the ball.
After this session with Miguel, I found a much clearer way to connect my idea of play with my sessions and competition.
It made things clearer not just for me, but for my players too."
"What I find especially valuable in Miguel’s approach is how the idea of the game is directly linked to the identity of the team.
It moves away from rigid models and focuses on shared intentions that players can actually recognize and apply.
That’s where the game becomes more natural, more coherent… and ultimately more effective."
"What stood out to me is that the team doesn’t need to be physically superior to create advantages.
When the structure is clear, players find solutions faster and more naturally. The game starts working for you, not against you."
"What Miguel helped me realize is that the game is not as complex as we often make it.
When you understand a few key principles and apply them consistently, everything becomes clearer. The team starts to function with more sense… and with more control."
"I’m a goalkeeper coach and I thought this wasn’t for me. But I realized the goalkeeper is part of the structure too.
Now he’s more involved, understands where the ball is, and makes clearer decisions. Both the team and the goalkeeper benefit."
"At first, it feels different. Even uncomfortable, because it challenges what you’ve learned before.
But when you see your team starting to control the game without relying on individual talent…that’s when you understand how powerful this approach really is."
"What Miguel teaches is not just about playing better. It’s about understanding the game in a way that simplifies everything.
I saw it clearly when it was applied at CD Castellón, the change was immediate."
"Sharing training sessions and matches with Miguel made me understand that the game is more about communication and cooperation than systems.
Systems fade quickly. But communication, cooperation and player autonomy — that’s what really sustains performance."
